RIP Tony Brown

ACT Monaro District Logo

It is with great sadness that I report the passing of a dear friend, Anthony Brown (know to most people as Tony), on Tuesday 13th June 2023, after a long struggle against cancer. Tony was a long-time golfing member at the Belconnen Golf Club and the Royal Canberra Golf Club. He also recently joined the ACT group of the Senior Golfers Society. Tony also made a significant contribution to district golf as the President of the ACT-Monaro DGA between 2010 and 2016. Prior to that, he had been Captain at the Belconnen Golf Club for a few years. He was the sort of person who was happy to volunteer his time and energies into the successful operation of golf at different levels in the Canberra area.

I remember the day of the DGA’s Annual General Meeting at the Goolabri Golf Club, on 5th December 2010, when there had been no nominations for the positions of President, Vice President or Secretary/Treasurer. Tony — who was at the meeting representing Belconnen — said something like “some-one has to do it so I’d better nominate”. Naturally he was appointed the President. Typical Tony — concerned, selfless and committed.

Tony was President of the DGA for the next 5-6 years until his declining health forced him to retire at the 2016 AGM. Tony was a “hands-on” President — he did not just sit back, set the agenda and let others on the Committee do all the work. During this period, he assisted me greatly with the running of the Junior Weeks of Golf (whilst I held the position of Junior Manager) and then the Interdistrict Challenges and the ACT Senior Championships (when I took over as Captain). Tony, a former auto electrician, was quicker with IT than me and he was closely involved with the introduction of the MiGolf and Mi Tournament software to assist with our tournaments. Jim Hourigan (President prior 2010) and then Tony drove the District’s early involvement into the local Government reviews of water use at the district’s golf courses. In 2013, Tony was closely involved with the organisation of golf as part of the ACT’s Centenary Celebrations.

The DGA sends its sincerest condolences to Tony’s two daughters and extended family.

A service for Tony will take place on Monday 19th June at Tobin Brothers Chapel, Nettlefold Street, Belconnen at 2:30pm.
