In atrocious playing conditions for golf at the Murrumbidgee Golf Club today (Sunday 30th April), Gold Creek’s Paul Bright won a one hole play-off to take the 2023 MCC Men’s Open title. Paul and Thomas Heaton (Australian Golf Club) were forced to this one-hole play-off after they finished equal first, on scores of 69 after round 1. The 2nd round had to be abandoned, before the scheduled start, as the Murrumbidgee course was under water and completely unplayable after heavy rain overnight.
MCC Captain Andrew Barber organised a match-committee squeegee-group to scrape a putting line on the 9th green after the two players had hit their tee shots short of the green and then chipped on to the green about 6m short of the hole. Paul putted first and finished 20cm past the hole and tapped in for his 4. Thomas was a little closer, but his put lipped out and he missed his putt coming back.
Photo shows ACT-Monaro DGA Captain Jim Jackson presenting Paul with one of his prizes — the award of entry into next year’s GolfNSW Open to be played at the Murray Downs Golf and Country Club. The DGA will also financially support Paul to attend this event. Thanks to Maureen Keogh for photo.
