On a breezy, but pleasant day at the Gold Creek Country Club on Sunday (18th Dec. 2022), one of Yowani’s top golfers — John Fitzgerald — recorded the lowest gross score of 70 (par), on a modified black-course, to win the title of 2022 ACT-MONARO DGA — DISTRICT CHAMPION. John scored birdies on 1st and 8th holes with only one bogey on the 4th hole to score 1-under on the front nine. A couple of bogeys to start the back nine looks omminous, but John steadied and a birdie 4 on the par-5, 16th hole, saw him record a 1-over back-9 score of 35, for the par total. John’s fellow Yowani golfer Adam Hayes (playing off +2) also had a top round, with a front-9 score of 36, followed by a back-9 score of 35 for a total of 71 (1-over par) and a clear 2nd-placing. Three players shared 3rd place — all on a gross score of 72 — Dave Armstrong (Gold Creek), Jarrad Porter (Yass) and Adam Robinson (Federal).

The nett competition was easily won by Gungahlin Lake’s golfer Aaron Holt with an impressive 6-under par round of 64. Playing off a 10- handicap Aaron had an impressive front 9 score of par, which comprised 7 pars, 1 birdie and 1 bogey. A less-impressive 38 on the back nine, was still only 4 over the card, so Aaron finished with a gross score of 74. Obviously, he’ll be playing off a single figures handicap at Gungahlin Lakes in the near future.

Dave Armstrong 69 nett took out the runners-up prize in nett, then 3rd place was shared by Gerard Dempsey (Yowani), Peter Gniel (MCC), Jarrod Porter (Yass) and John Fitzgerald — all on 70 nett.

Royal Canberra golfer HARRY BOLTON won the SCRATCH division of the 2022 DISTRICT ORDER-OF-MERIT COMPETITION, without even playing at Gold Creek. Luckily, Harry had an unbeatable-lead prior to this event, and won the first prize voucher with 705 points (acquired from the 5 events he played in). With their good scores at Gold Creek, Adam Hayes moved-up to outright 2nd on 635 points, John Fitzgerald was 3rd (588 points) and Jarrad Porter (Yass) 4th on 514 points.

Another Yowani golfer, Kacper Gancarz won the NETT division of the ORDER-OF-MERIT with a total of 301 points, only 5 infront of Jonathan Ricks on 296 and Aaron Holt (295). Kacper played in more events than anyone else in the district (10) during 2022, so it is not unreasonable that his commitment to the event has been rewarded.

Next year’s Order-of-Merit Competition starts at Gold Creek in only 3 weeks time.
